No nos cabe ninguna duda, "Surprise", el sensacional nuevo disco de The Yellow Melodies, va a ser la grata sorpresa de la temporada y, por qué no, una de las sorpresas del año. Sin embargo, el matiz de misterio que envuelve su título, no debiera ser una novedad para propios y extraños. Como muchos sabéis, tras la edición de "High", su segundo álbum (primero para Jabalina), el cuarteto de Murcia remodeló en profundidad su formación y, como consecuencia, reorientó la linea estilística hacia territorios en los que pudieran encontrar sus propias señas de identidad y sentirse más cómodos. Sin duda, un espacio en el que confluyen las mejores influencias de los 60', el Northen soul y la frescura de las tendencias más actuales de un estilo que, en linea recta, desciende de aquellos mismos gloriosos orígenes. Un volver a empezar que, en todo caso, se hizo con idéntica actitud y manera de entender la música pop, que les ha caracterizado desde sus inicios.

Ahora, "Surprise" es la evidencia de que la evolución experimentada por The Yellow Melodies transcurre llena de inspiración por senderos coloristas, que a cada paso logran emocionar al que se deja guiar sin prejuicios. Un disco de seis canciones que reune todos los ingredientes del mejor pop vitaminado, elaborado a base del aporte energético que dan guitarra, batería y bajo, pero con un elemento distintivo fundamental, que marca la diferencia y otorga un sabor personal y característico al sonido de los nuevos The Yellow Melodies: la viola y el hammond, omnipresentes a lo largo y a lo ancho de este fantástico trabajo y los preciosos coros de las Yellettes, que ya se deshiniben en su primera experiencia de estudio.

"Surprise" muestra en todo su esplendor el talento que Rafa Skam (Vacaciones) (voz y guitarra) es capaz de desplegar en sus composiciones, con la inestimable ayuda de sus tres nuevas compañeras de viaje: Laura (teclados), María de Mar (viola) y Pilar (bajo), que sienten y viven la música pop del mismo modo que su alma mater y que, en gran medida, son culpables de la revolución experimentada por el cuarteto. Y es que el espíritu es vital para transmitir y dotar de credibilidad a una propuesta como la que The Yellow Melodies nos presentan con ilusión contagiosa. Un mini CD que desde "Someone special", rebosante de buen gusto, que se encarga de abrir, hasta la preciosa y espectacular "All I want in my life" que lo cierra, es un trabajo brillante, coherente y comprometido con la causa del pop con mayúsculas. Un disco grabado en formato analógico (como mandan los cánones), con un sinfín de detalles y deliciosos arreglos, que el buen oyente irá descubriendo poco a poco, canción a canción. Y si no, prestad atención a la joya que le da título, un auténtico hit, a la increible "Believe" o las explosivas y vibrantes "Shooting star" y "Waiting on".

We're pretty sure that this record, The Yellow Melodies' latest release, is bound to be this season's - or even this year's- "Surprise". Although, if you come to think of it, the record's title shouldn't surprise anyone, for after the release of the band's last record ("High", their first on Jabalina) the band suffered a profound change in their line-up and therefore re-oriented their approach to make it fit with all the newcomers. This has taken them to a territory where the winds of Sixties music, Northern Soul and certain contemporary genres (Belle & Sebastian, Harvest Ministers) blow harder than ever. A 'back to basics' policy that has not changed their musical principles whatsoever - The Yellow Melodies still have it, and these colorist six songs will move listeners more than ever. This is a record where you can find the best ingredients of pop with added vitamins, such as fine guitars, drum and bass, plus special features that make a difference and define the band's new style: the ever-present viola and Hammond organ, plus the Yellettes' backing vocals.

"Surprise" shows Rafa Skam's (vocals, guitar, also a member of Vacaciones) tunesmith talent, assisted by his three new companions, Laura Sahagún (keyboards), María de Mar (viola) and Pilar (bass), three girls that share his love for pop music and who are also responsible for much of the band's evolution. Spirit is essential in transmitting music credibly, and in "Surprise" The Yellow Melodies are soaking with infectious enthusiasm. All the way from "Someone special", an opener which shows the band's great taste for a pop tune, or the spectacular closer "All I want in my life", this is a brilliant piece of work with a compromise for pop music's cause. The CD was recorded in an analogic studio with special attention to many stimulating details that the listener should discover little by little, song by song. Special mention to "Surprise", a treasure of a song (and a hit-to-be), the incredible "Believe", or the vibrant "Shooting star" and "Waiting on".
